A former soldier of Canadian origin who served for many years in the great forests in the Canadian Army reconnaissance unit. A veteran of the Indian wars, he is an extremely brave and skilled guide. After retiring, he began using his knowledge to lead gold seekers coming to the Klondike through the difficult geography. He enters the story when Ben and Summy hire him in Skagway. He reads nature well, and thanks to his bond with his animals, he leads the team safely. He watches Ben's project to subdue nature for the non-erupting gold volcano with amazement yet with admiration. He is loyal to his job and dedicated to his bosses.
Someone with a military background. An old regular of the Canadian prairies. A master figure who survived the great wars with the Indians and gained scouting experience on routes extending south from the Hudson Delta. With the explosion of the Gold Rush era, he is an independent entrepreneur who began selling his experience to get people through the wilderness alive.
He is in his fifties. Medium height, solid frame, with an iron-like physique. His beard is graying, and he has a face that reads of resistance to external elements, with very stiff and bushy hair cut close to the root. His gaze is piercing enough to see right through a person.
Hunter
He views him as a dishonest bandit against whom he sees no harm in killing in the desolation of the forest.
Ben Raddle
He is the assistant who shows great respect to him by calling him 'Mr. Raddle' and takes pleasure in watching the engineer's genius.
Summy Skim
He understands his concerns very well and occasionally reassures him.
