He is the son of Odysseus and Penelopeia. He was still a baby when his father went to war. For twenty years, he grew up without a father, in the shadow of the tyrants who occupied his palace. Initially a helpless and passive youth, he takes action under Athene's guidance. He travels to Pylos and Sparta to get information about his father. Upon his return, he reunites with his father and bravely supports him in the slaughter of the suitors. Throughout the epic, he transforms from a naive child into a leader.
He grew up in the Ithaca palace listening to his father's legendary stories but never seeing his face. As he witnessed the pressure the suitors put on his mother, he harbored a deep grudge against them.
