Seeing the face of a friend with a deep and painful past (the man who was Oliver's father) in Oliver, whom he initially judges for supposedly stealing his handkerchief on the street, he takes the boy home, nurses him back to health, and trusts him. Despite the objections of Grimwig and various unfortunate events, he never loses hope, and he uses his own money and energy to sever the ties between Oliver and the criminal gang and to seek justice. He is the man who eventually solves the mystery.
