A veteran of the Indian wars, he is an extremely brave and skilled guide. After retiring, he began using his knowledge to lead gold seekers coming to the Klondike through the difficult geography. He enters the story when Ben and Summy hire him in Skagway. He reads nature well, and thanks to his bond with his animals, he leads the team safely. He watches Ben's project to subdue nature for the non-erupting gold volcano with amazement yet with admiration. He is loyal to his job and dedicated to his bosses.
