A former army doctor, he served in Afghanistan. Although he left Baker Street for a time due to his marriage, he possesses the loyalty to return to his detective days at a moment's notice or whenever Holmes is in need. With his medical knowledge, he provides academic support to Holmes from time to time. His logic is sound, but he cannot make the extraordinary leaps of deduction that Holmes does. He is a sensible, moral, and reliable English gentleman. The reader learns of all these incredible events through his slightly bewildered yet entirely objective and admiring perspective. His presence balances Holmes's anti-social traits, which often border on sociopathy.
