A Syrian (as he is often referred to), over 70 years old, wealthy but boorish and vile-natured merchant. He acquired a massive fortune through trade with Egypt and Syria. He uses his wealth to hide his hybrid and ghastly physical appearance and to purchase young beauties. He has been Mehpeyker’s primary patron for years, dominating her as if she were his slave. Upon learning of the relationship between Ali Bey and Mehpeyker, he devises a horrific revenge plot to save his own ego and satisfy his inferiority complex. Although he is the chief devil who ordered the murder, as the plans go awry and Ali Bey loses his mind, he suffers a fatal stroke out of fear.
He grew his wealth by bankrupting merchants in Egypt and the surrounding areas through fraud, and by engaging in immoral dealings as if extorting money. He contracted syphilis from his sexual delusions, and his body is rotting away.
He is an extremely repulsive person over seventy. His dark/hybrid-colored face is heavily pitted from smallpox. He has characteristic Egyptian watery eyes with drooping lids, a large, rotting nose due to syphilis, a disgusting mouth full of rotten teeth, and sparse, animal-like beard hair.
