The Imam who united the Caucasian highlanders in the lands of Dagestan and Chechnya to resist Russian expansionism. He is intelligent and politically equipped, but equally ruthless and authoritarian. Shamil viewed Hadji Murat's growing power and influence as a threat to his own leadership, hence he declared him a traitor and took his family captive. He maintains absolute control over the people through strict Sharia rules, intimidation, and religious charisma. He never shies away from disposing of former allies to protect his power.
After the death of Hamzat, he took his place and built a unified gazavat army. The wars that lasted for years hardened him; as a result of the leadership friction between him and his former close friend Hadji Murat, he reached the point of trying to take his life. Throughout his Imamate, he established an absolute hegemony in the mountains of Dagestan.
Tall, with a rigid posture. He has a pale face and a trimmed red beard. His eyes are small and intimidating even when perpetually squinted. He generally wears a simple black fur with no ornaments, a black belt at the waist, and a flat-topped, high black hat. He is devoid of ostentation but is awe-inspiring.
