A freakish and grotesquely appearing, mysterious humanoid entity that represents time or death, or even the Devil himself. He resides in the castle as the owner of the final clock manufactured by Master Zacharius (the clock in the Andernatt Castle), which featured iron puppets. He comes to Geneva and insidiously makes the condition that Gérande be given to him. He seems to have taken hold of the mind of the master, whose death warrant he brings, by 'transforming the time of death into clocks that are the cipher of life.' He is a symbolic demon that tears through the boundary between life and death, God and the devil.
It is not clear where he came from or who he is, but he is a mysterious entity estimated in rumors to have lived for centuries. He lives in Andernatt Castle; he is a demonic clock master capable of wearing the mask of a nobleman.
His huge, flattened head rests on shoulders as wide as the length of his body, which is no more than three feet long. His body is no different from a pendulum clock stand; his chest sways like a pendulum. A nose as thin and sharp as a sundial gnomon; jagged teeth (resembling the teeth of a gear) and strange arms that rotate like the hand of a clock... He is, as it were, a living, ticking, freakish clock.
