İnce Memed, written by Yaşar Kemal in four volumes between 1955 and 1987, is an epic novel about the uprising of the Çukurova peasantry against the feudal landlord system and their search for justice. It depicts how Memed, who flees the tyranny of Abdi Ağa in the village of Değirmenoluk, becomes an outlaw and a hero to the people. Describing the geography stretching from the Taurus Mountains to the Çukurova plain, the work is among the most important modern classics of Turkish literature.

Closed village communities, nomadic tribes, strict patriarchal rules, and a feudal structure based on land ownership prevail. Sorrows are expressed through folk songs and laments; oral tradition and myth-making are very strong.

While initially there is a master and oppressed-slave relationship, the scales shift with Memed's uprising. As Memed gains strength and courage, Abdi Ağa becomes cowardly and turns into Memed's greatest nightmare.

A pure, star-crossed love beginning in childhood. Hatçe being forced to marry someone else serves as the primary spark that drives Memed to rebel and take to the mountains.

Ali Safa is a modern, cunning feudal lord who is well-versed in town law. Abdi Ağa is dependent on him. Ali Safa uses Abdi for his own interests and incites him to eliminate Memed.

They meet in Deli Durdu's gang and become sworn brothers. Cabbar respects Memed's secret morality and bravery, acting alongside him against injustice.

Deli Durdu is Memed's first gang leader. Memed is repulsed by his recklessness and his cruelty in robbing innocent people (leaving them naked), eventually drawing his weapon against him.

Iraz and Hatçe come together in prison. Both have suffered under the tyranny of the landlords. Iraz replaces her murdered son with Memed and acts as a mother to Hatçe in prison.

Topal Ali is the best tracker in the region, hunting Memed on behalf of Abdi Ağa. However, he secretly admires the resistance of Memed and risks his own life to prevent him from being caught.
I swear to God, he said, after your business, I swore never to track anyone again. Kill me. I swore it, I cannot track.
Süleyman is the old villager who took Memed into his home during his childhood and acted as a father to him. Memed often consults him when making decisions about his actions.
You shall not oppress the poor and the needy. Do what you will to the unjust and the wicked. Never rely solely on your own courage.
Tension initially arises between Memed and Recep Çavuş, an experienced bandit in Deli Durdu's gang, but their shared courage in conflicts leads them to unite their fates.
There is something about this man, he said. Everything he does stays with him. If any other bandit had done what he did, they wouldn't have lived for more than a day.
