Ben Raddle

A thirty-four-year-old engineer with goals, extremely hardworking and ambitious. With the dynamism brought by being the son of an American father, he dreams of earning great fortunes in the New World. When the letter regarding his deceased uncle reached the Canadian post, he chose to run after the millions in wealth lying behind the glaciers of the North rather than live an ordinary farm life. Events transform him from the role of a mere inheritor of a mine into a figure who discovers the secret of a massive Golden Volcano and challenges nature itself. He embarks on a water canal project to trigger the volcano in order to reach the gold in the depths of an unreachable mountain. His ambition brings the group's fate face-to-face with great disasters.

Bill Stell (The Scout)

A former soldier of Canadian origin who served for many years in the great forests in the Canadian Army reconnaissance unit. A veteran of the Indian wars, he is an extremely brave and skilled guide. After retiring, he began using his knowledge to lead gold seekers coming to the Klondike through the difficult geography. He enters the story when Ben and Summy hire him in Skagway. He reads nature well, and thanks to his bond with his animals, he leads the team safely. He watches Ben's project to subdue nature for the non-erupting gold volcano with amazement yet with admiration. He is loyal to his job and dedicated to his bosses.

Hunter

Hunter emerges as a wandering character of Texan origin in the Canada-Alaska border region (Forty Miles Creek). He is the owner of mine shaft number 127 in Bonanza or another productive area in the region; he is neighbors with Josias Lacoste's plot number 129 and is constantly bickering with him. He has a gang he has assembled of rough adventurers like himself. He does not recognize Canadian authority, disregards rules, and strives to have the border drawn in favor of America. While in prison, he heard about the gold in the Golden Mount region beyond the Polar circles from an Indian named Krasak; he escaped/left prison to seize this mysterious source in person with his men. However, he encounters Ben and Summy, who have seized the volcano; their violent armed confrontation ends with Hunter being blown apart by a bullet fired by Neluto.

Jules Verne

Jules Verne was born on 8 February 1828 in Nantes, the port city where the Loire meets the sea. His father, Pierre Verne, was a lawyer; his mother, Sophie Allotte de la Fuÿe, came from a family of shipowners and seafarers. He was the eldest of five children. He grew up on the quaysides, among ships unloading their cargo, and in 1847 his father sent him to Paris to study law. He took his law degree in 1851, but the theatre held his real interest; his first play was staged in 1850. For a time he worked as secretary of the Théâtre Lyrique and spent his free hours reading science at the National Library. In 1857 he married Honorine Morel, a widow; he earned his living as a broker on the stock exchange and gave the early morning hours to writing. His first stories, among them Master Zacharius, appeared in those years. Meeting the publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel in 1862 changed everything. Five Weeks in a Balloon drew wide attention in 1863, and the contract that followed launched the Extraordinary Voyages, a series that lasted the rest of his life. From the Earth to the Moon, Around the Moon and Doctor Ox's Experiment belong to that arrangement. In 1886 a shot fired by his nephew Gaston wounded him in the leg, and that same month he lost Hetzel; the books that followed grew markedly darker. He builds his narratives out of maps, calculations and technical detail; it is this exactness that makes the extraordinary believable. He counts among the founders of science fiction. He spent his last years in Amiens, serving long on the town council, and died on 24 March 1905 of complications from diabetes. Some texts, among them The Golden Volcano, were published after his death by his son Michel.

Lorique

A French-Canadian, Lorique was the long-time right-hand man of the late Josias Lacoste and the foreman of mine number 129 at Forty Miles Creek. He is a master technician in the muddy details of gold mining. When the heirs decided to operate the mine after his death, he became one of the main managers of information and action during the process. Having entered Ben's service, he becomes the supportive whisper that always provokes him in technical discussions and blinds him with the legend of new veins. He is the practical assurance of the excavation team for the engineer's plans to reach the volcano by operating the Golden Mount.

Neluto

He is the trusted native (Indian) guide for Bill Stell. He knows the northern regions, currents, and wilderness like the back of his hand. Silent and loyal, Neluto is not just a rower or boatman, but also a hunting companion; he creates a great synergy with Summy Skim during hunting sessions. With the keenness of his eyes (both in fending off drifting icebergs in the water and in finding a target) and his proficiency with weapons, he is one of the group's lifelines.

Summy Skim

Thirty-two years old, a wealthy gentleman who is the child of an Anglo-Saxon father and a French-Canadian mother. In his mansion in Green Valley, famous for its nature near Montreal, his only expectation from life is a comfortable existence and a good hunt. He never had any extreme ambitions or interest in trade or stock market games. Because of the mine his late uncle Josias Lacoste left behind in Dawson City, he is forced to embark on the toughest and most hated adventure of his life by his ambitious cousin Ben Raddle. Despite hating it and always advocating for truth and common sense, he possesses a soul noble, self-sacrificing, and loyal enough not to leave Ben alone in those freezing dangers. He is very skilled at hunting and is strictly committed to human values (respect for nuns, the instinct to protect the weak) and justice.
