An intellectual and scholar of Italian descent who was the former secretary to Cardinal Spada. Because he wrote political treatises long before Napoleon with the mission of uniting Italy under a single roof, he was targeted by Bonapartist authorities and thrown into the Chateau d'If. During his years of imprisonment, he resisted loneliness with his intelligence, invented his own tools and pens, and created a giant literary and philosophical legacy in his stash. When he breaks through to Dantes's cell via a miscalculated tunnel, he becomes a guardian angel for him. He leaves the young man all his knowledge and, finally, the decoded Monte Cristo treasure left by the Spada family.
Before entering the Chateau d'If, he was the most trusted close friend of Cardinal Spada. He decoded the mystery of the wealth that the Pope and Cesare Borgia tried to seize by poisoning, by reading the remaining documents, and proved the existence of the Spada family's hidden treasure. He was imprisoned in 1811 due to his ideals.
He has hair whitened by the sorrow brought by age, as well as imprisonment and hardship, and deep, intelligent eyes hidden under thick gray brows. Despite the thin structure of his face and his physical frailty, he has a spiritual aura reminiscent of an ancient prophet or a dervish, reflecting his wisdom with his beard reaching to his chest.
