A virtuous shipowner from Marseille, Dantes's employer and the owner of the ship 'Pharaon'. Trusting Dantes's intelligence and good intentions, he promises him the position of captain at a young age. When Dantes is accused of being a Bonaparte agent and imprisoned, Morrel repeatedly approaches the authorities to secure his release, despite all political risks and the pressures of the Royalist regime. He also cares for Dantes's elderly and sick father with his own money while Dantes is in prison and pays for his funeral.
As the owner of the firm Morrel & Son, he is a virtuous, Bonaparte-sympathizing merchant who has worked in Marseille for years, earned his wealth honestly, and is respected by everyone.
Looks like a classic, middle-aged, honest, and trustworthy French merchant who is devoted to his work.
Danglars
His loyal yet cunning accountant (though he inwardly does not trust him as much as Dantes).
Edmond Dantes
A very successful young sailor whom he protects as if he were his own son.
