Samwise Gamgee, the hardworking, humble, and earth-bound gardener of Bag End, is Frodo's loyal protector and closest friend. His great admiration for the Elves is the reason he overheard Gandalf's secrets and was thus pushed into the Ring journey. Initially, he is completely ignorant of life outside the Shire and full of fear; yet his courage arises solely from the deep love he holds for his master, Frodo. When Frodo is wounded or faces danger, he casts aside all his clumsiness and can transform into a ruthless warrior. During this process, the story witnesses how a simple peasant becomes a resilient and indispensable spiritual pillar of support.
His father, also known as the Gaffer, is the former gardener of the Bagginses. From childhood, Sam grew up with the strange stories Bilbo told about Elves, trolls, and dragons, and the desire to see these beings fermented in his heart. While doing his own gardening, he finds himself right in the middle of legends.
He is a sturdy, stocky, round-featured typical hobbit. He usually wears coarse-woven farmer clothes and carries a large load of gear along with many pots and pans hung on his back. He wears shapeless felt hats on his head to protect against the rain. His hands are calloused from work.
