Claude Frollo

He is the senior archdeacon of Notre-Dame, coming from a noble family. He dedicated his youth entirely to religious education and scientific research. Losing his parents to the plague, he attached himself to his brother Jehan, whom he took under his care, with a father's love. Later, he took pity on the abandoned, ugly baby Quasimodo and raised him in the cathedral. For years, he kept himself away from women, worldly pleasures, and weaknesses, conducting vast research on alchemy and philosophy. However, upon seeing the gypsy girl Esmeralda dancing in the square in front of the cathedral, all his beliefs are shaken. The irrepressible passion he feels for the young girl drags his soul into a dark abyss. This impossible love and jealousy unleash the most terrible, destructive, and selfish feelings within him. Despite inflicting pain on himself and those around him, he cannot give up this dark passion.

Esmeralda

Esmeralda, whose real name is Agnes, is a beautiful sixteen-year-old girl who was kidnapped by gypsies and earns her living by dancing on the streets of Paris. She lives with her clever goat, Djali, whom she keeps by her side at all times. Her beauty inspires admiration (and jealousy) wherever she goes. When she gets into trouble one night because of Quasimodo and Frollo, she becomes devoted to Captain Phoebus, who saves her, as if he were the love of her life. Her simple magic shows, combined with her love for Phoebus, draw the attention of a bigoted society. Her refusal to succumb to Archdeacon Frollo's desire to possess her leads to her being falsely accused of witchcraft and murder, subjected to torture, and ultimately sent to the gallows.

Jehan Frollo (Jehan du Moulin)

He is Archdeacon Claude Frollo's spoiled younger brother, who is addicted to fun and debauchery. While Claude desired for him to be a good scholar and priest, he chose drink, prostitutes, gambling, and street hooliganism. He constantly demands money from his brother and hangs out with thugs. Eventually, he abandons student life entirely to join the underworld and the Court of Miracles as a vagabond. During the sack of Notre-Dame, he is at the head of those climbing the tower and dies in a tragic (but earned) manner in a fight with Quasimodo.

Paquette la Chantefleurie (Sister Gudule)

Her youth, beauty, and zest for life ended when her illegitimate child, Agnes, was stolen by gypsies while still an infant. As a result of this trauma that darkened her life, she came to Paris and shut herself away in the partially buried cell at the Place de Grève known as the Trou-aux-Rats. For 15 years, she mourns while looking at the pink slipper, the only keepsake remaining of her daughter, crying out to the Virgin Mary. The greatest irony of the novel is that the hatred she feels for gypsies is projected onto Esmeralda, whom she does not know is her own daughter. It is only in the final moments that she recognizes the girl heading to the gallows as her own child by the matching slipper around her neck; she fights like a lion to keep her child from the executioners before collapsing and dying on the spot.

Phoebus de Châteaupers

The handsome and womanizing captain of the King's mounted archers. He is a soldier through and through with his magnificent uniforms, noble bearing, and combative nature. Although engaged to his aristocratic cousin Fleur-de-Lys, his eye is always on tavern girls, prostitutes, and new adventures. He rescued Esmeralda from attackers one night and arranged a tryst. Esmeralda is attached to him with a mad love, but Phoebus values her as nothing more than an object of desire. After being stabbed by Frollo and returning from the brink of death, he quickly slips out of the situation and continues his life by marrying Fleur-de-Lys as if nothing had happened.

Pierre Gringoire

A penniless Parisian poet, philosopher, and playwright. When his 'Moral Representation' written in honor of the kingdom is ruined, he falls into the streets of Paris, desperate and hungry. When he enters the Court of Miracles and is about to be executed, he is saved from hanging by Esmeralda's pity for him, but their relationship is more of a sibling bond than a real marriage. He is intelligent but quite prone to being pragmatic and selfish; he values staying away from the danger of death above all else. Although he later takes an interest in alchemy and architecture, he never fully abandons literature.

Quasimodo

El gigante y deforme campanero de la Catedral de Notre Dame de París. Abandonado de bebé y adoptado y criado por Claude Frollo, Quasimodo ha permanecido completamente ajeno a la sociedad humana. Las campanas de la catedral y las estatuas de piedra son su única familia; el sonido de las campanas lo ha dejado sordo.
