He struggles beyond his means to both keep the family together and make his wife happy; when he hits a dead end, he sacrifices his honesty by embezzling money from the bank. He is caught and goes to prison; this disaster paradoxically becomes his salvation, protecting him from the exploitation and destruction at home.
He is a clever young man who was expected to be a man of European standards, well-versed in languages and trained by his father, but was forced to quit higher education early due to economic hardship to provide for the family.
