She is Odysseus's greatest protector because she finds Odysseus's sharp wit and cunning close to her own nature. Throughout the epic, she directs the course of events, entering among mortals in the guise of Mentes, Mentor, or Telemakhos to give them advice and inspire courage. She plays a leading role in the defeat of the suitors in Ithaca and the restoration of peace on the island.
