An illegitimate orphan girl. Poor Fantine hands her over to the greedy innkeeper family, the Thénardiers, in hopes of working and earning money. However, this fake family treats Cosette like a Cinderella out of a fairy tale, making her a servant and, despite all those exorbitant payments, leaving the girl in rags, hungry and cold. Cosette's mind has become frozen from being unable to live her childhood; she has turned into a timid and wretched creature who trembles with fear. When Jean Valjean comes to town and helps her carry heavy water in the forest, gifting her a miraculous doll, Cosette's destiny begins to change.
Her father is unknown, and her mother was a poor worker. While she was only two or three years old, she fell captive to the worst inn, and she was unable to voice her protest as the innkeeper's wife treated her as a scapegoat, completely setting her apart from her own children. Despite the villagers calling her 'The Lark,' the only thing she did was work from dawn until the darkness of night.
While she was once quite graceful with blonde hair and blue eyes like her mother, constant beatings, hardship, and cold have thinned her to the bone; her face is pale, her eyes are bruised, and they have sunk into their sockets. She is a heartbreaking sight, with old, crude wooden clogs on her feet without socks and wearing thin, ragged clothing.
