A legendary Oghuz sage, whose full name is Korkut Ata, who emerged from the Kayı tribe. He is the most esteemed figure who foretells the unseen, solves problems, and whose word is considered law within the Oghuz community. He gives young heroes their permanent names after they display their skills and achieve success. At the climactic points of the stories, he settles disputes or seals the event. He recites verses that recount lineages and clans, and carry the epics of heroes from generation to generation. He is a blended symbol of an Islamic saint figure and an ancient Turkic shaman leader.
Korkut Ata, who is rumored to have emerged from the Bayat tribe near the time of the Prophet, is a sage who sought divine inspiration and distributed wisdom to the nomadic Oghuz tribes throughout his life. His past is behind a mystical veil, and he commands respect above all khans.
He appears as a white-bearded, radiant-faced, venerable, and respected elder. It is imagined that he carries his kopuz (lute) on his shoulder and wears simple yet noble dervish-like, traditional garments befitting a great personage.
