A retired colonel who calls himself 'General' with bravado; he is a man with a weak character, superficial, and entirely obsessed with money. He has exhausted his entire fortune and is indebted to Des Grieux up to his neck. His only hope is that his wealthy aunt in Moscow (the Grandmother) will die and leave him her inheritance. With this hope of inheritance, he has convinced an opportunist woman like Mademoiselle Blanche to marry him. When the Grandmother suddenly arrives at the spa and loses her entire fortune at the gambling table, the General literally loses his mind, becomes disgraced, and finally dies alone in Paris after suffering a crisis.
He served in a heavy cavalry regiment in the past and earned the title of 'general' upon retirement. Lacking any true nobility or management skills, he has tried to maintain his standing in society solely through ostentation and appearances. He has squandered his family's reputation and wealth on foolish adventures.
He is tall; although somewhat stout, he has a handsome face and long, dyed sideburns. He carries a frock coat well, and his behavior resembles perfection from the outside; he appears respectable and noble. His face often wears a look of artificial pride or extreme anxiety.
