President of the Gun-Club and a respected American citizen. He made a large fortune in the timber trade, was put in charge of artillery units during the Civil War, and contributed greatly to ballistics with his creative intelligence. Once the war ended, he re-ignited his bored artillery friends by offering them a new, civilian goal (sending a shell to the Moon) to channel their energy. He is a man with high leadership qualities who solves all mechanical, social, and psychological obstacles with mathematical rationality. Unlike the storm of excitement surrounding him, he is practically an emotionless, cool-headed, and tireless man of action who serves as the main driving force of the story.
Originally a Yankee from New England, Barbicane is descended from the colonial Northerners. After making a considerable fortune in trade, he turned to ballistics and artillery production during the Civil War, creating massive revolutions and inventions with surprising destructive power in this field. Once the gains of his era were spent and peace was declared, he turned his vision to the reaches of the planets.
About forty years old, with a serene, cold, and extremely serious facial expression. His deepening facial lines look as if they were drawn with a square. Average height, limbs intact (unlike many of the wounded veterans in the club, he emerged from the war without physical injury), and a true American figure with his legendary black top hat.
