Co-owner of the Waterloo Sergeant Inn in Montfermeil. She is a rough-spirited innkeeper's wife who only reads cheap romance and knight novels; however, with her massive physique, masculinity, and red hair, she resembles a terrifying soldier. This hate-filled figure, who perpetually targets Cosette with physical and emotional abuse, treats her own daughters like spoiled princesses. She is bound to her husband by a blind, secret fear and obedience.
She comes from a vagabond, mixed-race family whose origins and lineage are not very clear. She and her cunning husband rob miserable peasants and travelers in this run-down inn. They profit from the misery of others without showing any signs of conscience.
She is a tall, mannish, hulking woman, coarse-featured, toothy, and covered in moles. Her face is freckled, she has beer-mustache hair around her lips, and she carries a masculine, heavy-duty build in every way.
Cosette
The poor slave she envied and spewed her hatred upon.
Fantine
A distant and tragic cash cow they deceived for years, milking only her money.
Mösyö Thenardier
Her cunning husband, whom she loves and views as her secret leader.
