She is the General's stepdaughter. A proud, intelligent, complex young woman struggling with internal pain. She is trapped by her family's debts and her feelings for Des Grieux. After seeing the true (opportunistic) face of Des Grieux, her hatred, combined with the family's bankruptcy, makes her ruthless, vindictive, and temperamental. She is aware of Aleksey Ivanovich's obsessive love for her and does not hesitate to use him cruelly or play cat-and-mouse with him. Yet, she cares for Aleksey's soul. In the novel's most crucial moment, she shows she will not sell her pride by throwing the 50,000 francs Aleksey won solely to save her honor back in his face, and seeks refuge with Mr. Astley.
She grew up in an ambiguous position as the General's stepdaughter. She has no independent wealth of her own, living under the General's protection due to her mother, Katerina. The secret and unfortunate love she experienced with Des Grieux left her with a defensive hatred and disillusionment toward life and men.
She is tall, with a very slender and shapely body. She is so thin that one might say she could be 'knotted or folded in two.' She leaves a very narrow, long footprint. She has reddish hair and arrogant, proud, cat-like eyes that are piercing and intense.
