Rubeus Hagrid is the Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Although he has the terrifying appearance of a giant due to his size, his heart is pure, full of kindness, and extremely compassionate. When he was expelled from school as a youth after his wand was snapped for a crime he did not commit, Dumbledore was the only person who believed in him and made him the protector of the school. He watched over Harry from afar for years without giving up on him, after pulling him from the wreckage as a baby and entrusting him to Muggles. He was specifically chosen by Dumbledore to inform Harry of his true identity, to accompany him on Diagon Alley, and to buy his first wand and wizarding supplies. Despite his gargantuan size, raw physical strength, and clumsiness, he ironically possesses an excessive sensitivity and love for animals and creatures. He accompanied Harry on his first steps until the point of boarding the Hogwarts Express and bought him his owl, the first real gift of his life.
During his Hogwarts years, he was expelled from school after being accused of an unknown catastrophe, leading to his wand being snapped; afterward, thanks to Dumbledore's goodwill, he was left there to look after the grounds. Because of his great physical courage, he rose to the position of the person Dumbledore trusts most, whom even Voldemort would not approach.
He is more than twice as tall as an average human and five times as broad. Wild, mane-like tangled black hair and a beard completely cover his face; only his eyes, which resemble shiny black beetles, can be made out from between his hair. He wears a long, rough, black coat full of pockets and boots the size of dolphins.
