A veteran, lethargic manservant over fifty who has been with Oblomov since childhood; his whole life is intertwined with Oblomov's. He is the only relic left from the family's ancient greatness and the most ardent guardian of the belief in his noble past. Besides being mostly clumsy, inept, and dusty, he gives rude answers. Cleaning is torture for him. The presence of the widow Agafya in Oblomov's life and the skillfulness of Anisya disturbed him, but he could not object. After Oblomov's death, he refused to move into Agafya's house or enter the patronage of Stolz, choosing instead to pack his belongings and fall into begging on the streets.
A remnant of the old serf class, he never left his master's side in Oblomovka, serving him throughout. His entire character and habits were frozen in the service style of the noble order.
A man over fifty; bald-headed with gray sideburns, usually wearing a tattered gray jacket (a memory of his livery), disheveled and misshapen. When he became a beggar, he became unrecognizable with his torn overcoat and flushed face.
