Male tribute from the Career district of District 2. He has been trained his whole life to participate in the Games, to commit murder, and for the sake of glory. Physically and instinctively, he is a war machine who takes pure pleasure in slaughtering the weak.

Gale Hawthorne

Katniss's closest hunting partner in the Seam. He lost his father in the same mining accident that took Katniss's father, and he has taken refuge in the woods because he is responsible for caring for his three younger siblings and pregnant mother. He is an intelligent, angry, and brave boy full of the spark of political rebellion.

Haymitch Abernathy

He is the only survivor of the two victors District 12 has managed to produce in seventy-four years (the other is not alive). The Capitol forced him to be a mentor for years, which he found useless, and he turned to alcohol as a result of the deaths he witnessed. Seeing the contrasting characters and survival instincts that Katniss and Peeta display in the arena, he pushes himself for the first time to do something for them and starts begging for sponsors.

Katniss Everdeen

The protagonist and narrator of The Hunger Games. She comes from the impoverished corner of District 12 known as the Seam, and she joins the death march in the arena after volunteering in place of her sister. She manages to survive in the arena thanks to her years of experience hunting in the forbidden woods beyond the district's borders. Even though events cast her as an unwitting symbol of fire and rebellion, her first and greatest priority is always protecting her loved ones. Despite the ruthless and savage order of the arena, she puts up a relentless struggle to preserve her humanity.

Peeta Mellark

Although Peeta had a safer childhood as the baker's son in District 12, he grew up in an environment of domestic violence. After being chosen for the Games, he makes up a 'great love' story with his charisma and oratory skills to keep both himself and Katniss alive. While his combat skills are not as good as Katniss's, he possesses an incredible ability to communicate, compassion, and stubbornness. With his mastery of camouflage in the mud, he was able to endure for days without dying from blood loss and managed to reunite with Katniss.

Primrose Everdeen

Katniss's only little sister. She has a sensitive heart, a natural aptitude for healing, and a naive nature that is terrified of hunting and the woods. She is the center of Katniss's life, and her existence alone is the reason Katniss survives in the arena. Following the surprise drawing of her name, Katniss stepped forward to take her place.

Rue

The girl tribute from District 11 in the Hunger Games. She reminds Katniss of her little sister, Prim. This extremely petite girl actually possesses an agility famous for flying from tree to tree in agricultural fields. The alliance she forms with Katniss leads not only to blowing up the food supplies of their enemies but also causes Katniss to keep the compassion within her alive in the arena.
