The cathedral's bells and stone statues are his only family; he has been deafened by the bells' sound. The hidden purity within him sprouts with the sip of water Esmeralda brings him. The gratitude he feels for the first time in his life turns into a passionate and selfless love. He acts as her protector by rescuing Esmeralda from the gallows and sheltering her in the church, but he yields to the fate that prevents him from saving her.
When he was an abandoned baby on a wooden bench on Foundling Day, subjected to public disgust, Claude Frollo took him, named him Quasimodo, and imprisoned him in the tower. People's mockery turned him into a wild creature who hates society.
