Mr. Bumble

The head official of the workhouse, a fat, cruel, and pompous bureaucrat who views himself as the guardian of the church and morality. He crushes orphans and leaves them hungry. His eyes are always on power and his personal interests. He has a weakness for authoritarian women, and together with the cruel woman he married in the workhouse for profit, he becomes involved in secrets that could expose them. He enters into a conspiracy with Monks to sell these secrets.

Mr. Brownlow

He is a wealthy but kind-hearted, elderly book lover in London. Seeing the face of a friend with a deep and painful past (the man who was Oliver's father) in Oliver, whom he initially judges for supposedly stealing his handkerchief on the street, he takes the boy home, nurses him back to health, and trusts him. Despite the objections of Grimwig and various unfortunate events, he never loses hope, and he uses his own money and energy to sever the ties between Oliver and the criminal gang and to seek justice. He is the man who eventually solves the mystery.

Bill Sikes

A man entirely devoted to brutal crimes and theft, one of the most ruthless house-breakers and murderers in the underworld. Even his white dog, which he always keeps by his side, reflects the savagery of his character. He shows no remorse and, at his greatest breaking point, turns into a beast who has completely lost his humanity when he brutally murders Nancy simply for speaking to the police. While trying to escape justice, he accidentally lets the noose drape over his own neck and falls from a rooftop to his death.

Fagin

An old master within London's criminal underworld who snares street children to teach them the art of pickpocketing. He hides and fences stolen goods. Although a criminal, he has always managed to avoid being executed by hanging, often by letting the children get caught by the police instead. He attempts to lure Oliver into his criminal organization through clever games. In the end, his cunning fails him; he is caught red-handed and meets a gruesome end at the gallows.

Monks

Oliver's true half-brother (whose real name is Edward Leeford), born from his father's legitimate but unloved wife. To ensure that the entirety of his father's inheritance remains his, he tracks down the orphaned Oliver—born to the woman his father truly loved—and collaborates with Fagin to ruin the boy's honor and ensure he dies in disgrace or is hanged. He keeps his mysterious obsessions fueled by selling secrets for money.

Nancy

Having grown up under Fagin's hand, she became a prostitute/thief member of the London gang. While she appeared to have accepted this life for years, the dormant maternal affection within her awakens when she sees Oliver helpless and innocent before her. Despite the sick love she feels for Sikes, she wants to save Oliver. She makes a sacrifice by relaying all their plans to Mr. Brownlow and the Maylie family, but due to Fagin's betrayal and Sikes's relentless brutality, she is tragically murdered after being struck in the head with a pistol.

Oliver Twist

An orphan born as the illegitimate child of a mysterious woman in a workhouse. He grows up being pushed around in conditions of hard labor and malnutrition. When he dares to ask for a little more gruel—his basic human right—the system views him as a great danger, and he is essentially sent off to an undertaker's shop. Unable to bear his suffering, Oliver runs away to London, where his kind-hearted nature leads him to fall into the trap of pickpockets. Nevertheless, he resists letting his spirit be tainted. Throughout the story, he is caught between criminal gangs (Fagin and Sikes) and honorable, respectable people (Mr. Brownlow, the Maylie family). In the end, his true roots are revealed, and he attains the happiness, inheritance, and prosperity he deserves.
