Garrick Ollivander

Mr. Ollivander is the elderly, mysterious, and wise owner of the legendary wand shop on Diagon Alley that has existed since antiquity. Harry takes his first step into the wizarding world here. His craft is based on wands, approaching it with the philosophy that magic and the wizard's inner core are chosen entirely by the wood and magical core. He has become famous for his ability to remember with chilling accuracy the characteristics of every customer who enters his shop, as well as which wand he sold to whom and in what size. He is the first figure to whisper to Harry that there is a much larger, darker, and more frightening depth to this wand business by explaining his fateful connection to Voldemort.

Harry Potter

Harry Potter is the only person in the world to have survived the killing curse of the dark wizard Lord Voldemort as an infant. After his parents (Lily and James Potter) were tragically killed, he was placed with the Dursleys, his shallow and unloving aunt and uncle who were ignorant of the wizarding world. For eleven years, he slept in a bug-filled cupboard under the stairs, was looked down upon, and was constantly lied to about his origins. However, he learns his secret past through stubborn wizarding letters arriving as his eleventh birthday approaches, and finally when Hagrid kicks down the door of the hut on a stormy night. Harry's primary function in the story is to reflect a brand-new universe (the wizarding world)—which is a great enigma even to himself—to the reader through innocent, discovering eyes. He is no ordinary hero; he is a humble chosen one, unaware of his own potential, yet destined to stand against great dark powers. On this journey toward Hogwarts, he begins to taste a sense of belonging through his new abilities, unknown wealth, and new friends (Ron Weasley).

Hermione Granger

Hermione Granger is the only child of a Muggle dentist family. From the first second she learned she was accepted to the school of wizardry, she dedicated herself to her schoolbooks with immense ambition and discipline, becoming an expert in history, charms, and magical theory enough to crush her peers before the term even began. She left a highly authoritative, rote-learning, and snooty impression on Ron and Harry, whom she met while looking for Neville's toad on the train. Although her tendency to list what she knows to show others' ignorance rather than empathizing during their first contact makes her seem unsympathetic to her peers, what actually lies beneath is a fear of being a failure and an outcast in this closed community she entered as a Muggle-born.

Ron Weasley

Ron Weasley is the youngest son of a family consisting entirely of talented, pure-blood wizards, who is the same age as Harry and preparing to study at Hogwarts. He carries a sense of tension and invisibility created by living in the shadow of his legendary brothers' (Bill, Charlie, Percy, Fred, and George) success or popularity. He meets Harry Potter, who is famous in the wizarding world, in a Hogwarts Express compartment where they are left completely alone. Used to other people looking down on him because of his lack of money or worn-out belongings, Ron feels at ease with Harry's lack of pretension. With small anecdotes about chocolate frog cards, famous wizards, and their school, he functions as the first informal guide to the wizarding world for both the reader and Harry. Ron's presence adds fun, practical magical knowledge, and a source of true, unwavering support to the book.

Rubeus Hagrid

Rubeus Hagrid is the Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Although he has the terrifying appearance of a giant due to his size, his heart is pure, full of kindness, and extremely compassionate. When he was expelled from school as a youth after his wand was snapped for a crime he did not commit, Dumbledore was the only person who believed in him and made him the protector of the school. He watched over Harry from afar for years without giving up on him, after pulling him from the wreckage as a baby and entrusting him to Muggles. He was specifically chosen by Dumbledore to inform Harry of his true identity, to accompany him on Diagon Alley, and to buy his first wand and wizarding supplies. Despite his gargantuan size, raw physical strength, and clumsiness, he ironically possesses an excessive sensitivity and love for animals and creatures. He accompanied Harry on his first steps until the point of boarding the Hogwarts Express and bought him his owl, the first real gift of his life.

Vernon Dursley

Vernon Dursley is Harry's uncle and the director of the drill company Grunnings. He relies on his normalcy, respectability, and financial prosperity above all else; he loathes any 'abnormality' that might tarnish these. Because he is deathly afraid of Harry being a wizard, he believes he can destroy any potential Harry might have by shouting, locking him in a cupboard, and lying. Along with his wife Petunia, their greatest trait is boasting about their appearance and status. By spoiling his son Dudley excessively, he has turned him into a gluttonous and insensitive child. In the first chapters of the novel, he loses his rationality and becomes so crazed that he drags the whole family to a deserted shack on a rock in the middle of the sea just to prevent Harry's Hogwarts letters from reaching him.
